Hydrochloric Acid and Magnesium Ribbon

Word Equation: Magnesium + Hydrochloric acid → Magnesium chloride + Hydrogen
Formula Equation: Mg (s) + 2HCl (aq) → MgCl2 (aq) + H2 (g)
Ionic Equation: Mg (s) + 2H+ (aq) → Mg2+ (aq) + H2 (g)


One gram of magnesium ribbon was dropped into a test tube containing 10 cm3 of hydrochloric acid (1M). The magnesium floated and reacted very quickly with the acid producing a colourless gas. eventually the reaction slowed down and the magnesium ribbon completely disappeared.
